Orange & Lemons to Celebrate 25-Year Milestone with a Major Concert

“The music industry has seen a lot of changes, and being flexible and open to evolving with the times has helped us stay relevant. Our fans have been a cornerstone of our journey. Their support, enthusiasm, and feedback have inspired us to keep pushing boundaries and to stay true to ourselves. We’re always looking to grow and improve, whether it’s through honing our craft, exploring new musical avenues, or learning from our experiences. Building a genuine connection with our audience and staying true to our artistic vision has been key to our lasting presence. It also helped a lot to learn that we have to wear different hats, a business and a creative one that keeps us on check and balanced, staying focused on the bigger picture and not letting obstacles derail our journey. We intend to last as long as we can.” ~Orange & Lemons

The award-winning Filipino band will be performing a three-hour set featuring timeless and obscure songs from their critically-acclaimed, four-album catalog.

Orange & Lemons, a Filipino pop-rock band, will perform a one-night concert to commemorate their unforgettable 25-year musical journey.

The hitmakers behind the generation-defining anthems "Hanggang Kailan," "Heaven Knows (This Angel Has Flown)" and "Just A Splendid Love Song" will perform their greatest hits in a three-hour concert at the Metrotent Convention Center in Pasig City on October 18, 2024, beginning at 7 p.m. onwards.

The special show, titled "Now & Then: Orange & Lemons 25th Anniversary Concert," marks an important milestone for the four-piece band, who continue to grace the local music industry with captivating releases and memorable performances despite lineup changes over the years.

“Reaching this quarter-century milestone feels like a dream come true, and it’s a testament to the incredible community that surrounds us. We normally play short sets on the big stage all over the country, leaving out most of our catalog in favor of more popular ones. For this concert, we want to bring to the big stage and perform live, if not all, a majority of songs from our past 4 albums. The albums that defined different eras of our career in the music industry from the beginnings—the shot to commercial success, the psychedelic, and the cultural eras.  Expect us to perform and tell our story for over 3 hours!” ~Clem Castro, Lead Vocalist and Guitarist of Seminal Alternative Rock Outfit, Orange & Lemons

As an established indie act that is constantly pushing their artistic boundaries, O&L promises to provide a unique concert experience. The Bulacan-based alternative rock band sees the full-length concert as a special gift to their legions of fans, who have been with them through highs and lows, from their early days as struggling artists to their well-received reformation.

"NOW AND THEN" 25th Anniversary Concert is produced by Orange & Lemons and Lilystars Records, in cooperation with GNN Entertainment Productions. Tickets are available at https://orangeandlemons.helixpay.ph with the following tiers:

General Admission (PHP 2,000) - access to the concert

MPOX 101: EpiC Philippines tells all you need to know

“We as the general public can do our part to keep safe and minimize the effects of mpox in the Philippines by being vigilant, taking the necessary precautions, and staying updated and well-informed. “Knowing one’s own risks remains the most effective prevention method for now.” ~Ms. Teresita Bagasao, EpiC Philippines Project Director

Mpox is a viral infection that is currently on everyone's minds. Should we be concerned? Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) Philippines, a USAID and PEPFAR-funded project led by FHI360, explains everything the public, particularly people living with HIV (PLHIV), should know about the disease.

What is mpox?
Mpox is an illness caused by the monkeypox virus. According to the World Health Organization, mpox produces symptoms similar to smallpox. The primary distinction between the two infections is that mpox causes swelling in the lymph nodes. The most common symptoms of mpox are a rash with blisters on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, as well as fever, headaches, muscle pain, backaches, and fatigue.

How is it spread?
Mpox is primarily transmitted through close physical contact with someone who has the monkeypox virus, particularly through direct contact with the rash. This includes hugging, kissing, and sexual contact, such as penetrative or oral sex. The monkeypox virus can also be transmitted by talking, breathing, or singing face to face with an infected person, or by touching contaminated surfaces such as bedsheets, towels, or electronic devices.

Mpox, HIV, and ways to protect yourself
People living with HIV who have an undetectable viral load after taking their daily antiretroviral drugs (ARV) are not at a higher risk of developing severe cases of mpox. This is why it is critical for HIV patients to continue receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in order to maintain a healthy immune system capable of protecting them from mpox and other infections.

Mpox is not only transmitted sexually; it can also be spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, handshaking, hugging, and other acts that cause skin-to-skin contact. While ART and protective methods such as condoms and PrEP can significantly reduce HIV transmission, they are ineffective against mpox. A more effective precaution is to communicate openly and honestly with your partner about whether you are experiencing mpox symptoms, have recently had contact with someone who has mpox, or have recently been exposed to it.

Other ways to avoid the contraction include avoiding densely crowded public places where there is a higher risk of skin-to-skin contact, or if you live with someone who has contracted mpox, it is important to stay in separate rooms, provide them with their own set of things to use, and avoid sharing personal items such as towels or clothing.

However, if you suspect you have been infected with mpox and are experiencing mpox symptoms, contact your local health center or hospital immediately. Isolate yourself in a separate room with adequate ventilation and consult with your local health provider for additional guidance. Avoid bathroom sharing, and if this is not possible, disinfect the bathroom after each use. Also, disinfect high contact areas such as doorknobs, stair railings, tables, or faucets.

Mpox typically resolves within 2 to 4 weeks, and its symptoms, such as muscle pain or fever, can be treated and managed with over-the-counter medications as prescribed by your doctor.

ECCP Appointed as Accelerator for Race to Zero Campaign in the Philippines

“By joining ECCP in this initiative, we can work together to help steer the nation towards a resilient and sustainable future. We envision a Philippines where the adversities of climate change are a thing of the past, replaced by a narrative of resilience and proactive adaptation. ECCP's leadership in the Race to Zero in the Philippines mirrors this global momentum, positioning itself at the forefront of the movement to drive substantial climate action and economic transformation not only in the Philippines but in the region. ~Paulo Duarte, ECCP’s President

The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is pleased to announce its appointment as an official Accelerator in the Philippines for the Race to Zero – a global campaign rallying more than 14,500 non-State actors around the globe to take rigorous and immediate action to reach net zero by 2050.

As an Accelerator, ECCP will align with Race to Zero’s 5Ps: Pledge, Plan, Proceed, Publish, and Persuade, ensuring that initiatives encourage stakeholders to meet these criteria. Additionally, ECCP will support Climate Champions’ 2030 Climate Solutions and Breakthroughs to promote sector-specific advancements. The campaign also aims to raise funds to support activities in line with the Race to Zero roadmap, including Data Mapping, Impact Measurement, Net Zero Initiatives, Community Initiatives, Policy Support, and the fostering of Public-Private Partnerships.

This new role demonstrates ECCP's commitment to driving significant environmental and social change, which aligns with the global goal of halving emissions by 2030 and fostering a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable world. In April 2024, the ECCP formalized its commitment to working with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions team, which is leading the Race to Zero campaign. Through rigorous efforts and fulfilling all prerequisites, ECCP is now poised to launch this critical initiative, aiming to catalyze significant environmental advancements within the Philippines.

“We are thrilled to welcome ECCP to the Race to Zero campaign as an Accelerator and are keen to support them as they mobilise large corporates, SMEs, healthcare institutions and universities in the Philippines, driving ambitious climate action in the APAC region and beyond.” ~H.E. Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28 and Ms. Nigar Arpadarai, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29

Facing the Climate Challenge
The challenge we face in the Philippines is significant: the Philippines, one of ASEAN's largest carbon emitters, has yet to commit to a definitive net-zero target. The country's status as one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world highlights its urgent environmental challenges. This situation has been exacerbated by recent natural disasters, such as Typhoon Carina's devastating flooding, which affected over 1 million people and declared Metro Manila a disaster zone. The need for action has never been greater, and ECCP's role as an Accelerator will be critical in meeting these challenges head on.

Call to Action for Industry Leaders
Join us in the Race to a Healthier, Fairer, and Zero Carbon World. ECCP is inviting its members and leading corporations to join the first group of advocates to spearhead this transformative movement.

The Race to Zero campaign, which launched in June 2020, aims to accelerate global net-zero commitments ahead of the COP26 summit in Glasgow in November 2021. Since its inception, the campaign has gained significant traction, with 70% of current non-state actors leading the Race to Zero hailing from Europe. This significant participation includes 243 of the EU's top corporate climate leaders who are actively involved in the global effort. The transition to a climate-resilient, net-zero economy is expected to result in a nearly 25% cumulative increase in GDP by 2040.

Strategic Partnerships and Collective Impact
ECCP is committed to using its extensive network and resources to uphold the Race to Zero criteria and increase collective impact, resulting in significant change for communities and the environment. As an Accelerator, ECCP will adhere to Race to Zero's 5Ps: Pledge, Plan, Proceed, Publish, and Persuade, ensuring that initiatives encourage stakeholders to meet these standards. Furthermore, the ECCP will support Climate Champions' 2030 Climate Solutions and Breakthroughs to encourage sector-specific progress.

The campaign also aims to raise funds for activities aligned with the Race to Zero roadmap, such as data mapping, impact measurement, net zero initiatives, community initiatives, policy support, and public-private partnerships. Furthermore, ECCP will work to build campaign momentum and enhance global adoption of net zero through its platforms. Furthermore, the ECCP will use its platforms to encourage non-state actors to join the movement, share the criteria, and showcase case studies of successful net-zero transitions.

Join the Movement
ECCP invites all stakeholders to discuss potential collaborations and how each partner can play a crucial role in this historic campaign. Together, we can forge a legacy of sustainability and resilience for generations to come and join the Race to Zero. For more information, please contact: Dawn Cabigon, dawn.cabigon@eccp.com

Get ready to explore a whole new realm of tech choices for your next smart device, as HUAWEI pushes the limits of what’s possible in technology! With so many options on the market, Filipino consumers are excited to see what HUAWEI will reveal, anticipating groundbreaking features and advanced technologies that could influence their next smart device purchase. Expectations have been set, and Huawei is ready to meet the demand for innovative technological solutions.

A New HUAWEI WATCH GT Series on the Horizon
One of the most anticipated aspects of the upcoming event is the introduction of the next generation of HUAWEI WATCH GT. There is speculation that the new HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series will include the recently announced HUAWEI TruSense System, which promises to improve health and fitness tracking with more precise and comprehensive data. The HUAWEI TruSense System, which was introduced in August, also supports emotional health monitoring, making it a potentially game-changing piece of wearable technology.

In terms of design, the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series is said to have pushed the boundaries of fashion and functionality. Teasers on HUAWEI's social media channels have hinted at sharp, geometric designs made of premium materials such as metallic titanium alloy and white ceramic, providing a sleek, stylish, and innovative addition to the smartwatch market.

The Next Swing For HUAWEI WATCH Ultimate

Another highly anticipated release is the new edition of the HUAWEI WATCH Ultimate. Based on the teasers, golf-related features are expected to be introduced. This comes at an appropriate time, as an increasing number of users seek specialized features in their wearables based on their hobbies and physical activities. With golf becoming more popular in the Philippines, the new features on the Huawei Watch Ultimate are likely to appeal to users who value precision in both their game and their smartwatch.

In addition to the functional upgrades, the teasers revealed the watch's striking new Dual-Color Bezel design. The new texture and design are expected to improve the watch's visual appeal.

Next-Generation Blood Pressure Monitor

According to teasers posted on Huawei's social media pages, the next-generation blood pressure monitoring will be available on the HUAWEI WATCH D 2.

HUAWEI has stated that it will focus on expanding health tracking capabilities during the launch of the HUAWEI TruSense System, with reports indicating that it may include ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring) on its wearable devices. This would make the Huawei WATCH D 2 the world's first smartwatch to support dynamic, real-time blood pressure monitoring, paving the way for Filipino consumers' health and wellness.

The most recent major release in this area was the HUAWEI WATCH D in 2021, which was EU CE medical certified and well-received for its ability to measure blood pressure. HUAWEI's dominance in this market is notable, as it delivers yet another industry-leading smartwatch with innovative technology. With cardiovascular health being one of the top concerns for many Filipino users, the HUAWEI WATCH D 2's anticipated advanced features may strike a chord with those looking for dependable and innovative ways to track their health.

An Update to the HUAWEI MatePad Series

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro has a notable upgrade in the form of Tandem OLED PaperMatte Display, which boasts anti-glare capabilities, eye-soothing properties, and a pen-on-paper writing experience, improving overall performance and ushering in a new era of tablet-based creation. The launch will also include an upgraded HUAWEI Glide Keyboard, which could feature an innovative stylus storage design and seamless connectivity.

AI and IoT: The tools for building a sustainable future in Philippines manufacturing

“Sustainability for us means driving transformation for our customers while maintaining high efficiency, so we use less resources to achieve better results. We use IoT devices and AI solutions to enable data-driven decision making to help connect the manufacturing process and analyze issues and risks. This enables us to accelerate collaboration, maintain efficiency, and enhance product design and manufacturing, while considering the environmental impact. Collaboration is key to achieving ESG goals. By partnering with Cloud and SaaS leaders like SAP, ServiceNow and Microsoft - to name a few, we can co-create solutions that are tailored to the unique needs of the Philippines’ manufacturing sector, driving both environmental and economic benefits. The first step to develop a successful ESG strategy is to assess the organization’s current ESG practices and identify gaps. Organizations need to set clear, measurable goals and create detailed action plans to achieve them. Implementing a robust risks management and monitoring system is also key to executing a successful ESG strategy. ~Randy Escuyos, Head of Wireless Business Unit at Fujitsu Philippines
Randy Escuyos, Head of Wireless Business Unit at Fujitsu

The ability of Philippine manufacturers to embrace sustainability is critical to their future success. As climate change worsens and regulatory landscapes change, businesses that fail to prioritize Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) priorities will face significant risks, ranging from reputational harm to financial penalties. Fujitsu is empowering Philippine manufacturers to not only meet these challenges, but to turn them into opportunities for innovation and growth.

A new generation of manufacturers

The Philippines' manufacturing sector, which contributes significantly to environmental impact, leads the way in this movement. This shift is motivated by the critical need to combat climate change, adapt to regulatory changes, and create a better environment for future generations. Today's manufacturers are using circular economy principles to reduce waste and open up new business opportunities by recycling and reusing materials.

Leading local companies have made significant investments in promoting sustainable practices within their supply chains, emphasizing the importance of responsible sourcing and reducing carbon emissions throughout their operations. These efforts demonstrate the growing importance of sustainability in the manufacturing sector.

However, many companies, both domestic and international, struggle to develop the appropriate ESG strategy that also serves their business objectives. Integrating new systems into existing workflows can be difficult and resource-intensive. This entails involving all levels of the organization, from top management to operational personnel, to ensure a successful implementation. Accurate measurement and transparency in reporting are also essential for continuous improvement.

Digital innovation is an enabler for sustainability transformation

Any organizational transformation, including implementing ESG principles in the manufacturing sector, necessitates changes in people, processes, and technology. To truly transform businesses by leveraging digital innovation to bring about positive change in our environment, society, and economies, organizations must change their people's mindsets and business processes.

With this, technology companies have developed solutions to assist organizations in meeting their environmental, social, and governance objectives. Fujitsu believes that data-driven management, which connects leadership and on-the-ground operations, is critical to addressing sustainability transformation challenges. For example, the company has been pioneering a data-driven approach to Enterprise Resource Planning while also laying a solid foundation for effective data use. Fujitsu is now using its expertise in the ESG field to help create positive social impact.

The company also uses strategic partnerships to broaden its ecosystem. In the Philippines, there is a growing emphasis on promoting sustainability in business operations.

Fujitsu provides comprehensive services to support all stages of the sustainable manufacturing process, including strategy development and execution, data collection, and visualization. Fujitsu can assist organizations in navigating their specific ESG challenges and driving meaningful long-term results by providing tailored solutions.

Why Are Women—and Everyone Else—Getting Vaccinated Against HPV?

“There is what we call pharmacy-based immunization. There are now certain pharmacies that are licensed to give the vaccines. [Through] proper training and certification, they would be able to administer the vaccines.” ~Liza Sta Maria, President of the Philippine Society of Hospital Pharmacists

Women from various backgrounds came together for Guard Against HPV's impactful panel discussion, Her Story, Her Strength: Speaking Up on What We DeCerv, organized by MSD in the Philippines.

The event included compelling stories about health literacy from medical experts, practical insights into everyday preventive measures from influencers, and powerful conversations with advocates and survivors.

Niña Corpuz moderated the event, featuring panelists Dr. Stephanie Veneracion, Liza Sta Maria, Jane Cheng, Aencille Santos, Jessica Tinio, Ivy Bermejo, Belay Fernando, Bea McLelland, Cheska Garcia-Kramer, and Kendra Kramer.

What is HPV

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can cause serious health problems in men and women, including cervical, genital, and throat cancers. It is often spread unknowingly because many people are asymptomatic.

Dr. Stephanie Veneracion, an OBGYN, calls it a "silent pandemic." To combat HPV, she recommends the ABCDV approach: abstinence, be faithful, condom use, doctor consultation, and vaccination.

"[HPV] is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and is responsible for over 95% of cervical cancer cases." ~Dr. Stephanie Veneracion, OBGYN

Preventing HPV with Awareness

L-R: Panelists include renowned women’s health advocates Belay FernandoBea McLellandKendra Kramer, and Cheska Garcia-Kramer, with Niña Corpuz as the host.

Celebrity Mom and Women’s Health Advocate Cheska Garcia-Kramer shares her approach to starting tough conversations about HPV at home with her daughter Kendra:

“I know a lot of young girls are more comfortable talking with their peers, and young girls are also comfortable getting information through the internet. But I always remind her [Kendra] that your comfort should be with your mom. Because I love you. I don’t judge you. There are no questions too hard, too difficult, or too embarrassing that you can’t tell me.” ~Cheska Garcia-Kramer, Celebrity Mom and Women’s Health Advocate

Belay Fernando, former player and coach of the Philippine National Team for Women's football, and a cancer survivor, reflects on her experience with the early symptoms of cervical cancer:

“There were signs, but as Filipinos, as athletes, we were told to be strong. You have to put work ahead [or] this priority ahead. We weren’t really taught or told to prioritize our health or to listen to the signs of our body.” ~Belay Fernando, Former Player and Coach of the Philippine National Team for Women's Football, and a Cancer Survivor

Bea McLelland, a Beauty Queen and Advocate for Cervical Cancer Prevention, highlights the lack of awareness about the disease:

“Nobody really talks about cervical cancer. Not even with my friends, not in schools, not even within the family. They [medical professionals] opened my mind to it and how this is one cancer that can really be prevented with vaccination and early detection.” ~Bea McLelland, a Beauty Queen and Advocate for Cervical Cancer Preventio

Starting Open Conversations on HPV

As a member of the media, Jane Kingsu emphasizes the importance of spreading the word "in an easy and comprehensible manner" particularly as people read less and watch more. She believes that everyone has the ability to influence others, and as health advocates, we must address this issue proactively.

Jessica Tinio, a multi-hyphenate mom, content creator, and law student, explains how attending a previous 'Di Mo DeCerv' talk inspired her to “try to research and to read more.” Echoing Jane Kingsu's emphasis on accessible information, Jessica highlights the importance of dedicating time to reading and research, which she finds pivotal in her journey to prioritize her health while balancing the demands of motherhood.

Aencille Santos, a fitness content creator, believes that health is subjective but emphasizes four key areas to prepare against HPV: “movement, food, mind, and connections.” She stresses that these should be practiced consistently, even in small doses, as part of a daily routine.

People, particularly Filipinos, perceive health differently. According to Financial Advisor Ivy Bermejo, Filipinos frequently place a low value on their health. She emphasizes the value of investing in preventive measures.

“If you add in the emotional cost, mental stress, financial cost–it makes sense why investing in this is a smart financial decision.” ~Ivy Bermejo, Financial Advisor
