Natatanging Nilalang: Through Happy Walk, SM Cares and DSAPI honor Down syndrome individuals

“Happy Walk for Down Syndrome is all about bringing those with the condition and their families together. More importantly, the goal of the event is to give them a platform for their voices to be heard, so that the everyone can know more about them, about the challenges that they encounter every day, and what all of us can do to make life better for them.” ~Engr. Bien C. Mateo, SM Supermalls Senior Vice President and SM Cares Program Director for Disability Affairs

"Natatanging Nilalang," a song by Ronnie Lee that is dedicated to people who have Down syndrome, emphasizes all of the characteristics that make these people special. Lee's song is a message of empowerment for those with Down syndrome and their loved ones. It was written with affection for those with the condition because he has a nephew who has it.

One of the causes that the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) has worked for is to give people with Down syndrome and their families more power. The Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, which is organized in conjunction with SM Cares, is one initiative that the organization has actively implemented since its inception in 1991.

The Happy Walk for Down Syndrome is an annual event that brings people with Down syndrome and their loved ones together for a day of family-friendly entertainment and fun. It is held every February as part of National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month to raise awareness of the condition and gain a better understanding of those who live with it.

DSAPI and SM Cares will hold a physical version of the long-running event on February 26 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City, following a three-year hiatus. The Happy Walk Parade and the ShowDOWN segment, in which individuals with Down syndrome can showcase their talents, are among the activities that attendees of this year's event can anticipate. Additionally, they can anticipate games and amusing activities at booths inside the venue.

Interested participants may register through DSAPI’s official Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/downsyndromeassociationofthephilippinesinc) or register onsite on the day of the event by visiting the SM Employees Booth at the Mall of Asia Music Hall from 7:30AM.

SM Cares is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, with programs that support communities, promote social inclusion, and care for the environment. Aside from the program on PWDs, its advocacies include Programs for the Environment, Women & Breastfeeding Mothers, Children & Youth, Senior Citizens, and the SM Bike-friendly initiative.
