Messages of Strength for Superhero Frontliners transforms Metro Manila Billboards

“Every day our frontliners answer the call of duty, risking their health to take on extraordinary burdens brought about by these extraordinary times. But with the rest of the country in quarantine, they may feel left behind and alone outside. Frontline Heroes is our way of directly expressing our message of strength to the frontliners, cheering them on as they go to work, and lifting their spirits as they go home. Hopefully, the empty roads become less a reminder of isolation, more a source of energy and inspiration.” ~Jos Ortega, CEO of Havas Ortega
Commander Doctor as seen along C5 Bagong Ilog
Havas Ortega leading media and creative agency transformed digital billboards all over Metro Manila. Characters from Frontline Heroes like:

  • Commander Doctor (doctors)
  • Power Packners (cashier and supermarket baggers)
  • Kidlat Rider (delivery drivers)
  • Incredible Guard (security guards)
  • Super Nurse (nurses)
  • Truth Twins (journalists and cameramen)

Are now being displayed along Metro Manila’s main thoroughfares, raising the morale of our already tired and weary COVID-19 fighters in Alabang, Makati, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Pasig, and Quezon City.

Idled by the lockdown into empowering messages of strength for Filipino frontliners. Turning billboards once filled with ads into digital comic books featuring frontliners as superheroes, the agency’s “Frontline Heroes” is a tribute to the Filipinos who brave the dangers of the outside world so the rest of the country can survive inside their homes.

But they need our help to keep them going! #TuloyAngLaban is the reaffirmation of support needed to renew our Frontline Heroes’ strength as they continue to fight a long and tiring battle against the pandemic.” ~Griffey de Guzman, Associate Creative Director of Havas Creatives

6 healthy home-works in maintaining a healthy lifestyle from SM Home

With most of us homebound due to lockdown these days, it's the best time to start good health habits by preparing nutritious meals for the family and creating a wellness-based lifestyle whose benefits we will enjoy beyond the quarantine.  It's also the best time to rediscover the simple joys life and of doing things together.

SM Home, the one-stop-shop for all of your home essentials, shares with us some healthy home-works from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization in maintaining a healthy lifestyle:

  • 1. Prepare a Weekly Meal Plan and make a shopping list of items you need before you go to the store for your routine shopping. Create the list from the meal plan and include back up ingredients on your list in case your first choice is out of stock. Limit the list on buying the essentials.
  • 2. Stock up on nutrition-packed food such as whole grains, bread, and fresh fruits and vegetables; and staples like sauces, milk, eggs, spices, and condiments. Fresh products should be consumed first. Frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as canned vegetables and fruits, are good alternatives as these have a longer shelf life.
  • 3. Build up a stock of healthy snacks for your children - yogurt, nuts, cheese, chopped or dried fruits, boiled eggs, and more. Stock them up in a stackable glass container to seal freshness and label them.
  • 4. Continue to practice Food Hygiene and Safety. Wash fruits and vegetables under running water and dry it with vegetable spinner; use separate chopping boards for meat and seafood as you prepare the meal, and don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds before and after preparing your meal.
  • 5. Drink water regularly and stay hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses a day to boost your immune system.
  • 6. Make cooking and eating together a family habit. Kids can help wash and sort the ingredients and set the table before the meal. This creates a healthy routine and fun bonding with the whole family. Also, practice mindful eating and stay away from processed food.

These are available at the smhome.com.ph and shoppers can now place their order online through the thesmtore.com and ShopSM app. For more info and updates, follow them at SM Home at the SM Store on Instagram or visit thesmtore.com website.

Enjoy healthy home-works and memorable meals together with home essentials from SM Home.

With the lockdown almost a month now the country’s workforce is relying on fast internet connection and efficient productivity tools. With most of the population working from home, that is why the fastest growing internet service provider Converge ICT is resuming their operations in Metro Manila and select areas in North Luzon to power hundreds of Filipino households relying on their broadband service.

To protect both their employees and consumers, installer personnel will be covered with protective masks and all paraphernalia and vehicles will be fully sanitized before being taken out for service.

On their part, employees are given temporary lodging near their office, sanitation kits with alcohol, gloves, and masks, and vitamins to boost their immune system. They are also provided with food to minimize their mobility and undergo daily temperature checks.

The processing of applications for new users has already resumed and will operate during weekends to fast track the need for Converge’s service. In addition to the installation service, customer service and repair services will also resume. The services may take within 3 to 10 days in compliance with travel restrictions, checkpoints, and essential manpower that may restrict the operations.

Filipino startups harness the power of tech to help combat COVID-19

“Startups are called to do what they do best — they are rising up to this challenge by deploying innovative solutions, moving quickly, and showing us how we can harness the power of technology for the greater good. We are seeing startups from different industries working hard at this time, from logistics to ecommerce to fintech and edutech. At a time when most of us are relying on technology to stay connected and keep working, these startups are showing us how it can be done. They are, in a way, frontliners in their own rights, taking initiative to tackle this crisis by leveraging their strengths in technology to help our country move forward despite the challenges brought by this pandemic. Our mantra at QBO is ‘Filipino Startups Changing the World’. We have always believed that our homegrown ventures and innovators can make a meaningful contribution to solving critical challenges and create impact. Now, our startups are showing what they’re capable of, and we hope that everyone will take notice, and recognize the crucial role that Filipino startups can play in bringing fresh ideas into action and will continue to support them in future. ~Katrina Chan, director of QBO

QBO is the country’s first public-private initiative for startups, created through a partnership between IdeaSpace, J.P. Morgan, Department of Science and Technology, and Department of Trade and Industry. an innovation hub or a platform for the startup community to collaborate, develop talent, and grow. It provides startups with support and resources through events and capacity building programs as well as focused interventions designed to improve access to markets, knowledge, capital, and talent.

The impact of COVID-19 left many businesses navigating the digital space. Some are caught off guard while others utilize their expertise in technology. Take it from Filipino startups who have been stepping up to help combat COVID-19 in their own ways. To provide tips on how they’re doing it, startup founders gathered for a QLITAN, a bi-weekly networking event hosted by QBO Philippines since 2016.

Startup founders Shahab Shabibi, co-founder of MyKuya; Gabby Dizon, CEO and cofounder of Altitude Games; Moritz Gastl, vice-president of Growth of First Circle; Stefano Fazzini, CEO of MetroMart; and Bonnie Factor, founder of Leading with Success with moderator Rocky Chan and QBO Head of Operations Natasha Bautista and QBO Director Katrina Chan during the first virtual QLITAN session held amidst COVID-19.

But this time, QLITAN was held online. In this virtual event, founders shared how they are responding to the crisis. Headlining the session titled “Startup Survival Guide — Adapting to the New Norm” are Moritz Gastl, vice-president of Growth of First Circle, a startup which provides business financing and access to credit; Shahab Shabibi, co-founder of MyKuya, an app that allows on-demand services such as grocery deliveries; Gabby Dizon, CEO and cofounder of mobile and blockchain game studio Altitude Games; Stefano Fazzini, CEO of online grocery delivery service MetroMart; and Bonnie Factor, founder of Leading with Success.

Filipino startup Container Living spearheads the creation of Rapid Deployment Hospitals to aid in the overcrowding of medical facilities due to COVID-19.

These startups are now using this opportunity to create a lasting difference — banding together and using technology not only to ease people’s burdens but even potentially save lives.

Startups aiding the government on the battle against COVID-19
Now more than ever, the tech capability of startups can help the government in a number of ways. The Department of Science and Technology with Developers Connect helped launch the RapidPass system where frontliners manning checkpoints can easily inspect vehicles and individuals by scanning QR codes.

Senti, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning, provides the knowledge-base for the chatbots that the Department of Health deploys in different channels to address COVID-19-related inquiries. Local tech company Multisys, on the other hand, developed the online and mobile platform StaySafe.ph which aims to help the government in conducting efficient contact tracing.

To enable faster response from local government units (LGUs) in the fight against COVID-19, Limitless Lab, in partnership with The Asia Foundation, developed LGU vs COVID PH. The platform is an easy-to-use, updated, and reliable dashboard of all COVID-19 related information that LGUs can use and refer to.

Startups offering convenience, on-demand services
Unknown to many, some of the essential needs met at this time are also powered by startups. MetroMart enables people who are stuck at home to have their goods delivered right at their doorstep. To further harness its capability, MetroMart launched MetroMart Cares, a special online store for grocery donations in partnership with World Vision and Gawad Kalinga. Another startup, Zagana, helps bridge the gap for local farmers and consumers in need of fresh fruits and vegetables.

MyKuya also provides convenience during the quarantine by helping run errands for those stuck at home and vulnerable to COVID-19. Some of its services include meal delivery, bills payment, and pharmacy and grocery runs. AIDE, a home healthcare platform, connects patients and medical professionals straight from their smartphones.

Even outside the Metro, startups continue to thrive. Pandalivery, an on-demand food delivery service available in Camarines Sur and Albay, expanded its service by including groceries and medicines to help amidst the quarantine. Streetby, an app that allows different merchants to continue to reach households in areas in Mindanao including Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin, Davao, General Santos, and Iligan.

Startups connecting the world, bringing communities together
Aside from providing essentials, startups are also mobilizing their resources and skills to aid in addressing challenges brought about by COVID-19. QBO incubatees Container Living and Kumu are harnessing the power of their community.

Container Living, a startup that converts containers to buildings in its effort to lower carbon footprint and costs, saw the opportunity to pivot their innovation to address the overcrowding of medical facilities brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Container Living CEO Mac Evangelista spearheaded Rapid Deployment (RAD) Hospitals alongside its team of local architects, professionals and engineers to build scalable, easy-to-deploy, isolation, and intensive care facilities for COVID-19 patients.

Livestreaming app Kumu launched Kumu Lives Streaming Service which conducts private live streams for free in an effort to enable Filipino communities, here and around the world, to hold events and gatherings online amid the quarantine, and Social DistanSING, a livestreaming initiative for a cause which brought together artists and celebrities online to share their talents and help raise funds for families affected by COVID-19. To date, Kumu’s cause has raised an estimate of Php1.2 million pesos for charity.

For its part, QBO also harnesses the power of tech by continuously providing support and learning opportunities to Filipino startups, making sure they are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to push forward despite the threat of COVID-19.

For more information, visit facebook.com/QBOphilippines/ and qbo.com.ph/.

Strong Faith, Great Teammates, Man’s Best Friend are Joshua Pacio’s Lockdown Essentials

“The important thing for me in this kind of situation is praying to God. He is the only one who knows what's going to happen, trusting in God in this kind of situation is important and of course, we should trust Him not only in these situations but in good times or bad. My teammates inspire me every day, they are the reason why I'm a champion, they helped me get to where I am today, they motivate me in downtimes and help me realize what my mistakes are. The hardest part is that we can't go to the gym to train, that's why we find ways to train inside our homes. In the past years, we were lacking training equipment in the gym. This is not new to us, so we find ways to stay sharp. Luckily, I have punching mitts and manong (older brother) Kevin [Belingon] and I are in the same barangay (village) so we hold pads for each other. Actually, this pandemic taught me more about how to bond with my dog. And my dog is getting fat so I need to go run or jog with her. When I get older, I think we need to talk about getting up in a higher weight division. But for now, I have no intention of going up in weight classes because my teammates are in those weight classes. Honestly, I’m not the guy who has a dream opponent. I just focus on improving every day and every bout. I am a champion and I need to prove that every time I step inside the Circle.” ~Joshua Pacio, ONE Strawweight World Champion

On many occasions, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong has stated that he would never sign an athlete like Conor McGregor because he doesn’t embody the values of the company. In many respects, ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua Pacio is the polar opposite.

Pacio is a shining embodiment of traditional martial arts values. Nicknamed “The Passion,” Pacio is a man who relies firmly on his faith. In these times of uncertainty, it’s something that he has turned to for reassurance. Pacio is part of a unique band of brothers at the famed Team Lakay of Baguio City, Philippines. Remarkably, he is one of five athletes who have realized their dreams of becoming World Champions at ONE Championship.

Under the watchful eye of legendary coach Mark Sangiao, Pacio and his team combine a strong work ethic with deep-rooted values to achieve unprecedented success. They didn’t start out with any fancy equipment, but the strength of their collective mindset gave them everything they needed to succeed.

While the current COVID-19 situation is far from ideal for an elite martial arts world champion, Pacio’s experience as a member of Team Lakay has put him in good stead. Having a teammate nearby is certainly helping Pacio stay sharp during the pandemic, but as fans have seen in his recent social media posts – one companion, in particular, has become a mainstay of his daily routine. While Pacio’s dog may have put on the pounds, he doesn’t intend to follow suit.

Pacio’s reservations about a jump to flyweight are understandable. ONE’s flyweight division really is packed with his brothers from Team Lakay. Geje Eustaquio is a former ONE Flyweight World Champion, and Danny Kingad was a finalist in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix. Meanwhile, competing at his current weight seems to suit Pacio just fine, with his second reign as king of the strawweights producing some impressive results.

After winning the belt back from Yosuke Saruta in Manila in April 2019, the young star returned to his nation’s capital twice more to carve out a statement victory over veteran wushu world champion and fellow Filipino Rene Catalan in November, before going on to clinch a decision win over former strawweight titleholder Alex Silva in January.

ONE Championship’s martial arts values are integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion. In difficult times, it’s inspiring to see an individual who has such a strong grasp of what it means to incorporate them into daily life, whether it’s in or out of competition, or indeed, in the midst of a global pandemic.

But, judging by his work ethic, as well as the strength he draws from his faith, his teammates, and indeed, his furry companion, Pacio has all the ingredients to flourish under any circumstance. Despite not having about booked for the first time in a long-time, the 24-year-old Pacio’s mindset seems sharper than ever as he looks to carve out an enduring legacy in the world’s largest martial arts organization.

Understanding Stress and Reducing Its Effects on Your Health

By Dr. Kent Bradley, Chief Health and Nutrition Officer, Herbalife Nutrition

Reducing stress in your everyday life can make you happier and healthier. When you become stressed, the brain undergoes both chemical and physical changes that affect its overall functioning. Stress can contribute to a number of mental and emotional disorders, including anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks.

Did you know that our body does not discriminate between sources of stress – it simply responds to the stress.  So, whether the stress is coming from an actual event – like a car nearly hitting you—or simply a thought – I wonder if I will get hit by a car someday – the body may react in a similar way. Now, in these times when there is so much uncertainty, stress can have a huge impact on our bodies.

So, what is the “stress response” and why do we have it?
In a nutshell, it is for our own survival.  You see, we are geared towards survival and our minds are constantly on a threat alert.  Some have called this the “fight or flight” response.  I think we all know how it feels – the sudden increase in heart rate, perhaps increased respirations, all meant to prepare the body with oxygen needed to suddenly move into action.  Underlying this is a shower of hormones that stimulate the body’s actions but also have impacts on other aspects of our health.

We increase the circulation of adrenaline, known as epinephrine, that activates our heart rate, but it also stimulates the release of glucose and fat from storage sites as a source of fuel.  If left unchecked a second response happens that causes the release of cortisol into the blood stream.  Cortisol increases the amount of glucose in our bloodstream and can stimulate hunger which can lead to eating more calories than we actually need and thus becoming overweight or obese.

What does all of this mean when we are under stress from COVID-19 worries?
Acute stress can be both helpful and harmful to our body.  It can be helpful as it forces us to be vigilant in protecting ourselves and our loved ones. It can be harmful because it causes our blood pressure to rise and our heart rate to increase, and for those who have underlying cardiovascular disease, this may trigger a heart attack or stroke.

However, what is of greater concern is a state of chronic stress, such as many people are experiencing in this time of uncertainty. In this state, the body is continuously activated, resulting in elevated blood pressure and weight gain, which are factors in cardiovascular disease.  Additionally, cortisol is known to reduce the production of our immune protective cells known as lymphocytes.  In the acute phase, we may actually see an increase of these cells, but as we move to a more chronic state of stress the cortisol release leads us to a decrease of lymphocytes making us potentially more susceptible to ineffectively fighting off infection.

Overcoming the “stress response”
So, our perception of threat is what creates a cascade called a stress response.  That response is natural IF there is an actual threat AND if momentary.  However, our health, through the possible impact on weight and blood pressure, can be negatively impacted by this stress cascade if not managed well.

Focusing on reducing our stress and improving our health can be accomplished with a handful of simple practices. I call them my 6 Rs.
  1. Rest - First, get enough sleep!  Adequate sleep is extremely helpful in calming down the stress response.
  2. Relaxation techniques - Deep breathing – whether done through meditation exercises or while you are doing yoga – the key is slow, intentional deep breathing!
  3. Recreation – Keep active while practicing social distancing – whether that means a walk or reading a book (something you love to do).  Taking time for yourself to do something you love to do that involves some form of activity (mental or physical) is helpful!
  4. Relationships – staying connected is so important.  We are meant to be in the community.  We may be physically isolated but that does not mean we need to lose our connections to others. Telephone or video calls can be a great way to stay connected.
  5. Routine – yup, in the midst of change why add another one.  Stay consistent.  Suddenly need to work from home – then get up at the same time, set up an office, and work like you normally would.
  6. Reframing – reassess the perceived stress so it no longer is viewed as a threat.  You may need the help of a coach to help you through the practice of first identifying why something is viewed as a threat and then placing that into a context that is helpful.

At Herbalife Nutrition we have a global nutrition philosophy that recognizes the importance of a holistic approach to health and thus a more resilient response.  Managing your stress is one critical component.  We also believe in the power of community and the importance of a coach who can help you on your journey towards improved health.

Solane employees in Cebu prepared and distributed meal packs, grocery items, and other essentials to police officers, security guards, food vendors, barangay officials, and other frontliners in Mandaue City, Liloan, and Consolacion, Cebu.

Previously, Solane, together with Solane Kitchen Hero winner Chef Coke Semblante and his team from Cebu City, also worked together in providing free food to health workers and other frontliners in different areas of the province who are actively fighting the spread of COVID-19.

DOST & SMART expands RapidPass project to cover entire Metro Manila

“Your company's support to the government to realize the full operationalization of RapidPass will affect millions of Filipinos who will benefit from the decongestion of Quarantine Control Points, as well as the health of PNP personnel at the control points as they will now be able to exercise social distancing with the use of RapidPass.” ~Fortunato dela Pena, DOST Secretary in a letter to PLDT Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan who approved Smart’s support for the initiative

PLDT Inc's wireless subsidiary Smart, in partnership with DOST, DICT and IATF-MEID are now expanding the RapidPass coverage to cover all of NCR's 180 checkpoints. These phones will be used to equip with three devices each of the 180 checkpoints which daily process an estimated 1 million people in Metro Manila who are allowed to go out of their homes for work or other essential purposes.

Going through quarantine checkpoints in the entire Metro Manila area is about to become easier for frontline personnel and other people authorized to travel under the COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions.

To achieve this, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF-MEID) are expanding the RapidPass Project, an online registration service for frontliners, to cover the whole of Metro Manila.
“We hope that this initiative of the DOST, DevCon, DICT, and the IATF will provide a positive example of how we can fight the COVID-19 pandemic in a smart way, using digital technologies.” ~Jovy Hernandez, ePLDT President, and CEO and SVP & Head of PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups
Developed by DevCon Philippines and the DOST, RapidPass.ph is a website that provides for free a unique QR code that serves as authorization for frontliners like health workers and people delivering food, medicine, and other essential supplies to go through checkpoints quickly and securely.  The QR code can be printed on paper and placed on vehicles, or, saved on smartphones to be shown to uniformed personnel manning Quarantine Control Points (QCPs).

To enable the service to work throughout Metro Manila, PLDT Inc.’s wireless subsidiary Smart Communications has provided the DOST with 540 smartphones loaded with voice, SMS, and data packages.  The mobile devices will be used by the Philippine National Police (PNP) at the QCPs to read and confirm the validity of the QR codes being shown by frontliners, thus facilitating their movement.

At the launch of the RapidPass service in early April, PLDT, through its Enterprise Business Group, supplied an initial batch of 200 smartphones for the trial implementation of the system.  The first phase of the project covered the main checkpoints at the boundaries of Metro Manila which helped authorities to set up RapidPass lanes in the highways leading to and from the metro area.
“We are grateful to the DOST and IATF for giving us the opportunity to help make life easier for our frontliners as they provide services that are so vital to the public.” ~Jane B. Basas, SVP & Head of Consumer Wireless Business
To expand RapidPass coverage to all of NCR, the DOST needed an additional 340 mobile phones to bring the total count to 540.  These phones will be used to equip with three devices each of the 180 checkpoints which daily process an estimated 1 million people in Metro Manila who are allowed to go out of their homes for work or other essential purposes.

Moving forward, the IATF is thinking of using the RapidPass system for the entire country, even after the COVID-19 Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) is lifted, either entirely or partially. This will help the government control the movement of traffic even after restrictions are relaxed and thus help prevent the continued spread of the coronavirus.

The ultimate guide to achieving the perfect work-from-home makeup

For those who are working from home and frequently need to attend online meetings, remember that you can skip the fancy skirts and opt for comfy PJs but you definitely can’t put in less effort on your face. Looking your best every day is definitely a must and the enhanced community quarantine is definitely not an excuse to skip your beauty routine.

Below are some useful makeup tips to appear smart and crisp for your next Zoom or Facetime meeting:

Look fresh. You are no longer beating the rush of everyday traffic so the most important tip is to make your skin look healthy and glowing. To achieve this, apply a small amount of Ever Bilena Pro Flawless Finish Foundation starting from the middle of your face, outwards blending properly using your fingertips or Ever Bilena Blend Me Sponge. This liquid foundation provides full coverage that will give you a flawless finish.

Conceal. The last thing you would want to look like in your online meeting is tired and sleepless. Cover your dark circles from working overtime or binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix with an ample amount of concealer. On top of your foundation, apply Ever Bilena Liquid Concealer on the darkest shadows of your eye bags to even out the color of your under the eye. You may also use it to spot conceal your unwanted skin imperfections.

Don’t overdo your eyeshadow.  Look more natural and presentable by going for light or neutral shades. The Ever Bilena Eyeshadow Pink Palette can come in handy as it features six neutral and classic shades that perfectly match your everyday makeup. It is pigmented and blendable for easier application.

Define your eyes. As much as a perfect shade of eyeshadow does the trick, a gentle swoosh of mascara can also make your eyes look more alive. Swipe on some Ever Bilena Advance Lash Define Mascara to visibly define and lengthen your top and bottom lashes with its dual-sided wand and waterproof jet black ink that will definitely make you look awake and more alert.

Add color to your cheeks. Video calls can make you look pale. Blend a generous amount of Ever Bilena Matte Color Stick over the apples of your cheeks all the way through your cheekbones for a natural-looking flush. The Ever Bilena Matte Color Stick is a multipurpose cream stick that works for the eyes, cheeks, and lips.

Go easy on your lippie. Be as simple as you can be with your overall makeup including your lippie. Go for neutral shades to make you look more formal. You may use the Ever Bilena Matte Nude Lipsticks that come in six colors to complement your choice of eyeshadow.

After following all these, make sure you sit where there is ample lighting so your workmates can see you clearly. Then, try checking yourself out on your phone or laptop’s camera to see if your makeup appears as desired. If yes, then it’s time to slay that online meeting and impress everyone!
