Was founded by James R. MacKay to utilize its advanced green technologies. The company focuses on the development of various renewable energy systems designed to efficiently convert Waste and Biomass to Energy and Fuels. MacKay Green Energy Inc. (MGE) not only complies with the standards but also opts to utilize green technologies in its mission to bring renewable and sustainable energy to the Philippines. Launched in 2010. MacKay Green Energy Inc. has since created regular jobs for Filipinos and is getting closer to its goal on helping the country to become more environment-friendly. The company focuses on the development of various renewable energy systems designed to efficiently convert Biomass to energy and fuels. One such project is dedicated to MacKay variety Bana Grass, a crop imported by the company that can be turned into fuel to produce energy. The Bana Grass is a perennial hybrid variety (pennisetum purpureum X pennisetum americanum) that is highly tolerant to drought and typhoons, pest-resistant and is also non-allergenic. The climate and rainfall in the Philippines is ideal with growth rates exceeding all expectations. This is a dedicated biomass feedstock that does not compete with any food staples. An organic fertilizer and plant husbandry regime has been developed by MGE in consultation with many Filipino experts in an effort to ensure the sustainability of the projects.
HOW GREEN IS GREEN
The world's rain forests and green cover shrink as our demand for energy and dependence on fossil fuels continue to increase. With our very existence threatened by pollution from fossil fuels, the world has no choice but to reduce its carbon footprint. This is being done with the use of wind, solar, water, geothermal and biomass - all renewable energy resources. Mackay Green Energy, Inc. (MGE) has chosen biomass. Only through biosequestration, the capture and storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with a dedicated bioenergy crop can we achieve a truly green solution. A hybrid, the Bana Grass (Mackay variety), with it's high yield, energy and crude protein contents, in conjunction with organic fertilizers, is our highly viable and sustainable bioenergy resource. A substantial crop can address requirements for biomass and coal (green coal from bana grass – better substitute) for existing and new power plants as well as feed stock and silage for cattle and other animals. In the process, we create jobs at all levels, from workers on the farms, to engineers in the plants, to executives at the corporate. MGE envisions a true green solution where man, earth and technology coalesce. MGE technologies are: bana grass, silage, torrefaction, green coal, green power and green based (organic) fertilizers.
BANA GRASS
- Hybrid of Pennisetum Purpureum and Pennisetum Americanum
- "Mackay Bana Grass" is a dedicated bioenergy crop. It is owned by Mackay Green Energy, Inc. A protected plant variety certified by the Bureau of Plant Industry
- “Mackay Bana Grass” is a registered trademark
- Yields up to 200 Tons per hectare per year dry or 400 Tons wet
- Highly tolerant to drought and typhoons, pest resistant and Non- Allergenic
- Philippine climatic conditions (warmth and humidity) ideal for growth
- 3 harvests per year for biomass
- Extremely deep-rooted and good for soil stabilization especially on slopes
- Responds well to organic fertilizer
- Harvested by hand or machine
- It is a non-invasive perennial. As a C4 Plant Species, it is semi Nitrogen Fixing (less fertilizer required)
Hybrid of Pennisetum Purpureum and Pennisetum Americanum
Uses of Bana Grass
Green Coal From Bana Grass
Green Coal
- Using Torrefaction, Green Coal can be produced with a calorific value up to 11,400 BTU/lb or 26.5 GJ/ton (Used in Coal Powered Plants, Cement Factories, Worldwide Exports etc.)
Biomass Fuel
- Perfect fuel for IFGT (Indirectly Fired Gas Turbine) and existing steam boilers with a calorific value up to 8,000 BTU/lb or 18.6 GJ/ton
Bio Fuel
- Using Fischer-Tropsch Process, Bana Grass is converted to liquid fuel. Biofuels can be customized to produce diesel, gasoline, kerosene & aviation fuel
Pelletization
- Pelletization
High Grade Animal Feed Stock
- At around 8 weeks, the crude protein content is extremely high at approximately 16 percent when harvested making it good as feedstock for any type of cattle, for example: Japanese Wagyu and Kobe.
After 4 months, the top portion of Bana Grass contains enough crude protein to be used for animal feedstock while the bottom portion is used for biomass fuel.
Perfect for silage.

TORREFACTION
The Torrefaction system is Exclusive rights to advance torrefaction for different company.
The Biomass is heated indirectly at a high temperature in the absence of Oxygen to produce Green Coal as byproduct.
All volatile matter evaporate (producer gas), recovered and fed to fuel Externally Fired Gas Turbine.
The calorific value of the resulting Green Coal is increased by up to 35 percent to 11,400BTU/lb or 26.5 GJ/ton
Green Coal is sold as a valuable commodity and, when pelletized, is hydrophobic in nature (better suited for transport due to its stability & density)
Less than 3 percent ash content (component of organic fertilizer)
High Lignin content gives green coal hydrophobic (water repellent) quality. It does not get wet nor absorb water.
Lignin acts as a natural binder in pelletization and briquetting
GASIFICATION
A technology for a competitive and extremely versatile bio syngas that could compete with fossil fuel industry.
Applying torrefied biomass in Gasification creates substantial higher value than direct Combustion.
EXTERNALLY FIRED GAS TURBINE (EFGT)
- EFGT consists of 3 primary sections: compressor, combustion chamber & turbine
- Temperature during the process 1200ºC – 1600ºC
- Creates electricity & heat (600ºC)
- Utilizes a variety of fuels, including natural gas, fuel oils, and Syn-gas
- High efficiency & almost NO emissions
- EFGT capacities ranging from 1.8MW to 11MW
TORRGAS
Torrgas Biomass Lifecycle: Combined torrefaction and gasification that creates circular biobased solution
- Biopolymers synthesized through photosynthesis. Torrefaction process consumes fibrous residues and excludes editable molecules as sugar, starches and oils.
- Torrefaction process produces highgrade solid biofuels from various woody or agro feedstocks. The intermediate product is homogeneous, inert, high quality biofuel with far greater caloric value and energy density, providing preffered properties in storage, transport and logistics.
- Produces nitrogenand tar free bio-gas and biochar, a competitively priced and extremlely versatile bio-syngas such as which Torrgas installations can deliver, could compete with the fossil fuel industry.
- Nitrogen and tar free bio-syngas can be applied as a methane or propane replacement in gas burners, a feedstock for synthesis to bio based chemicals polymers and fuels.
- Engineered bio carbon that can be applied in a wide variety of applications from soil enhancement in agriculture to activated carbon for water purification and fuel gas cleaning or low sulfur petcoke replacement.
