The way the UP men's football team shows their affection for their happy and healthy dogs

The UP Men's Football Team (UPMFT) got together in the dugout on a sunny Monday morning to eat breakfast and catch up with their teammates in anticipation of an exciting day.  They're in uniform and playing football on the field with dogs in place of their regular drills.

For a group that trains nearly daily while juggling their studies, it's a change of pace.  The former UAAP football champions are expected to do so.  This time, though, they are forming a bond through their shared love of dogs and alternately assisting their teammates in keeping an eye on them.

After a demanding day of training and school, UPMFT's furparents understand what it's like to return home to a contented dog. Finding comfort in dogs

Playing football can be difficult and exhausting, just like any other sport.  The difficulty may also be increased by the pressure to represent one's university.  Spending time with their dogs is one way that UPMFT student athletes find their zen, which is why it's so important.

Additionally, dogs can encourage people to spend more time outside, particularly when they need to relax after training and assignments.  Ken Saludez, a winger and defender, does this with his three dogs, Cola the Labrador, Coco the Shih Tzu, and Churro the Mini Poodle.  He explains that taking dogs for walks and baths is a family activity, highlighting the fact that this is their weekend bonding activity.

More importantly, dogs can provide comfort to their owners, giving a calm presence when things become too overwhelming. For forward Florenz Tacardon and his brothers, their Beagle named Bigol’s “kulit” personality always perks them up when they’re tired. 

He also shares how Bigol became a source of comfort when a close teammate passed away two years ago.

Forward Josh Garces, who’s originally from Cebu, says he misses being able to talk to his dogs, Twix the Shih Tzu and Tisoy the Pug, when he needs someone to vent to “even though they don’t answer.”
