#ColorsInBloomAtSM: A Burst of Color, Culture, and Celebration



This year’s Panagbenga has been nothing short of a color spectacle showcasing Baguio’s arts and culture. 

A key highlight of the event, The Mighty Bhutens Art Exhibit, brings the spirit of the Cordilleras to life through its artistry. This display features works by Kabunyan de Guia, Guiller Lagac, and Oliver Olivete—collectively known as The Mighty Bhutens. Their pieces, inspired by National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, reflect a spontaneous, playful approach that remains true to the rich heritage of the region.

The Food and Crafts Fair, running from February 17 – March 03, features local MSMEs presenting a variety of products, including souvenirs, foods, and delicacies. The Food Truck Fest at The Drive offers a unique mix of tastes and flavors from local culinary entrepreneurs.

The Arts and Crafts activity sparks creativity among students from various schools as they repurposed past Panagbenga decors into sustainable art. Families enjoyed bonding at Family Art Day, while friends found inspiration from the scenic Sky Terrace view during the Painting Competition.

The shoppers enjoy the Panagbenga spirit and festive atmosphere enriched by music and cultural performances from groups such as Day Eng Cultural Group, University of Baguio BIBAK Ubbun Kaafuan, Paggawisan Tako Am-In from the University of the Philippines-Baguio and Gawis Culture and Arts Ensemble. 

Fur-parents and their beloved companions struts their super style in a fun-filled costume contest. The Pet Pawstival kicked off with a paw-some day of bonding and laughter, creating unforgettable memories for both pets and their devoted owners.

The weaving workshop, led by master weaver Cathy Ekid from Bontoc, shares her expertise in backstrap weaving. With the assistance of the Pasakalye Group of Artists, mall-goers try their hand at this traditional craft, contributing to the preservation of the art of weaving.

Hiraya: Dreams in Bloom showcased a heartfelt collection of artworks that captured dreams and aspirations through the enchanting beauty of flowers. Featuring over 60 pieces from 48 artists, the exhibit highlighted the incredible talent of prominent Pasakalye artists, blending tradition and creativity in a captivating visual storytelling.

Blooming Weaves celebrated Cordillera’s rich weaving traditions through a stunning fashion show and exhibit. Featuring the Fashion Designers Alliance Cordillera, the event blended traditional fabrics with modern, eco-conscious designs. Visitors admired intricate handwoven masterpieces, showcasing techniques like backstrap weaving, pedal loom weaving, and ikat dyeing—each a testament to indigenous artistry.

Spectacular fireworks, vibrant floral displays featuring a dynamic blend of pastel floral designs, and striking gobo and light installations throughout the mall further enhanced the Panagbenga celebrations.

On February 23, residents and visitors eagerly gathered to witness the highly anticipated Grand Float Parade, featuring 44 beautifully decorated floats that captivated the crowd.

As the world continues to grapple with depleting resources, the need for renewable energy has never been more urgent. Understanding this, SM has been continuously ramping up its renewable energy initiatives by adopting solutions that lower its carbon footprint. One such solution is the adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, which provide clean and renewable energy by converting sunlight directly into electricity. This allows SM to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and contribute to a greener environment.


Expanding solar power across SM malls

As of February 2025, SM is nearing full operations for the solar PV systems installed in 45 of its properties across the country, with more slated for retrofitting soon.

SM’s use of solar PV systems is just one of the many ways the company has been taking a more sustainable approach to energy use while supporting the country in achieving its sustainability goals. Its efforts continue to be recognized by reputable institutions both locally and internationally.

For instance, SM’s flagship mall, SM Mall of Asia, was recognized at the 2024 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards and Sustainable Energy Awards organized by the Department of Energy (DOE). It won the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution for its solar PV system, which is capable of generating 2.7-megawatts (MW) of peak energy---enough to power 1,790 households for an entire year. 

Meanwhile, SM City Butuan was recognized under the New and Existing Building category at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Energy Awards 2024 Best Practices Competition for Energy-Efficient Buildings. Endorsed by the DOE to represent the Philippines, the mall was honored for advancing energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) innovations in its design and operations.


Supporting the DOE's Renewable Energy Roadmap

Alongside its efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into its operations, SM is also committed to supporting the DOE in achieving its targets under the Renewable Energy Roadmap 2017-2040, particularly its goal to increase the country's renewable energy installed capacity to at least 20,000 MW by 2040.


Public-Private Partnerships for a sustainable future

SM collaborates with partner solar PV system providers under the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Distributed Energy Resources program. These service contracts define the conditions of the partnership, project timelines, and the assigned malls for each provider, aligning with SM's adoption of renewable energy.

The 30-foot catamaran is designed to efficiently collect and carry up to 1 ton of waste.

In a joint effort for Manila Bay, SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), was present for the handover of a state-of-the-art catamaran trash boat to complement the ongoing battle against water pollution. DENR received the boat last January 31, along with essential navigation and safety equipment as well as cleaning tools. The 30-foot catamaran will be operated by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office - South Zone and will contribute to the agency's capacity to combat water pollution and preserve the vital marine ecosystem.

This donation strengthens the DENR's arsenal in its multifaceted approach to cleaning Manila Bay. The catamaran will enable more efficient removal of floating debris and waste, contributing to the broader effort to improve water quality and restore the bay's ecological health. The partnership with SM Prime exemplifies the power of public-private collaborations in tackling complex environmental challenges.

Emphasizing the shared vision of both organizations. SM Prime's contribution complements the DENR's ongoing initiatives, including the Paranaque Adopt-a-River project, and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving lasting environmental improvements.

The presence of DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and other DENR officials emphasized the agency's commitment to leveraging partnerships to achieve its environmental goals. The catamaran will play a crucial role in the DENR's continued efforts to protect Manila Bay from pollution and preserve its valuable resources for future generations. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies (ARISE) Philippines, a leading resilience network in the country, held its first annual general meeting for 2025 on January 27 at the ARISE Secretariat headquarters in MOA Square, Mall of Asia Complex. With a growing membership of 156 private sector companies, civil society groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and academic institutions, ARISE Philippines is poised to significantly impact disaster resilience efforts nationwide.

Under the theme “Catalyzing Progress for a Resilient and Sustainable Future towards ARISE 2030,” the meeting was grounded in the words “Innovate, Integrate, and Elevate,” urging members to embrace new approaches, collaborate across sectors, and raise the bar for disaster resilience standards.

The Co-Chair representing the private sector, Engr. Liza Silerio, welcomed the collective and expressed her gratitude for the network’s role in promoting community resilience and sustainable progress. For the public sector, Office of Civil Defense Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the importance of engineering solutions in disaster preparedness and highlighted the critical role of committed private sector leaders in building a more resilient nation. 

Chief of Office UNDRR Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific Marco Toscano-Rivalta, in a video message, commended ARISE Philippines for its outstanding contributions to disaster risk reduction. 


Member companies pledge their participation in ARISE Philippines’ seven new programs.


ARISE Global Board Member Vice Admiral (VADM) Alexander Pama, ret., was present to bolster the local network and guarantee its support to the international alliance. A highlight of the meeting was the unveiling of seven ARISE Philippines Materials and Knowledge products by the ARISE Board of Directors. These resources are designed to support members in implementing resilience-building initiatives. The meeting also included a call to action for members to actively participate in seven new programs to be initiated this year.

Grab Philippines Launches Green Programme, Promotes Sustainability for On-Demand Services

Grab Philippines, a leading superapp, formally introduces its Green Program, strengthening its dedication to environmental sustainability.  In collaboration with strategic program partners Fostering Education & Environment for Development, Inc. ("FEED"), EcoMatcher Ltd., and the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary Project, the initiative launches a new toggle-on feature that enables users to actively engage in environmental conservation efforts across Grab's on-demand mobility and delivery services. 

With every ride or delivery, Grab users can help save the environment by participating in the Green Program.  Users can contribute PHP 2.00 for each GrabCar or GrabTaxi ride, and PHP 1.00 for each GrabFood or GrabMart delivery.

One of the program's main projects is the planting of mangroves in Dulao Village, La Union.  Ecomatcher and FEED, a Philippine-based NGO that focuses on sustainable education and tree planting with the goal of restoring, preserving, and protecting biodiversity nationwide, are supporting this endeavor, which entails cooperation with the local populace and farming community. 

Grab users can tap on "Account" and select "Support the Environment" to opt in or out of the Green Programme with a simple toggle. This user-friendly option is also available before confirming any food or grocery delivery. 




The Green Programme Toggle is also conveniently accessible to Grab mobility service users through the three-dot overflow menu on their booking screen.  Users have the option to leave the program at any time. 




Regionally, the Green Programme also supports the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary project, which meets the internationally recognized Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) standards. This initiative helps protect and restore nearly 300,000 hectares of natural ecosystems while safeguarding 75 threatened species. 

The Green Programme is the latest addition to Grab's comprehensive sustainability initiatives. These efforts include allowing customers to opt out of receiving cutlery in food deliveries to minimize plastic waste and a regional collaboration with BYD to provide electric vehicles to Grab’s driver-partners throughout Southeast Asia. Additionally, Grab has teamed up with Starbucks for the FoodShare Program, leveraging its delivery network to distribute unsold food from Starbucks locations to local nonprofits such as the Philippine Food Bank Foundation, in a bid to tackle food insecurity in the country.

With the launch of the Green Programme, Grab continues to lead the way in promoting sustainable urban mobility, and food and grocery delivery, empowering users to make eco-conscious choices.

 In order to help micro and small businesses expand and prosper, DG Brigitte expressed her desire to support them by utilizing IPOPHL's services.  Her chief of staff, Atty., joined her.  Calrio Louie and Atty.  Reggie Pamatian is in charge of IP enforcement, which includes projects with e-commerce sites to stop illegal sellers and fake goods, a problem that many CCIP members are concerned about.

This year's race, the nation's first and only corporate-focused running event, is expected to be bigger and better, bringing together professionals from different industries in the pursuit of corporate wellness, fitness, and camaraderie.

In order to accommodate runners of all fitness levels, the BPI #BestLifeRun Corporate Race, which will take place on June 8, 2025, at Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati City, will have four race categories: 3KM, 5KM, 10KM, and 21KM.  It anticipates 6,000 attendees, including a mix of workers from different businesses.

Teams of at least four people can be registered by businesses and organizations, and they can compete not only for speed but also for the title of fastest, fittest, and most competitive organization.

Beyond the thrill of competition, the net proceeds of this year’s race will support BPI Foundation’s partner communities nationwide.
