“The Philippines is currently experiencing the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the Western Pacific, with new cases surging among young people. There needs to be a greater effort from both public and private sectors to reduce stigma and increase awareness of HIV, available services and safer sex practices. Over the years, we have seen how effective the correct use of condoms and lubricants are in preventing HIV transmission. The addition of PrEP as another method provides more choices for everyone’s personal protection. While it is true that HIV is an ongoing epidemic in the Philippines that needs to be mitigated, we must also acknowledge that HIV is already easily preventable and manageable through the available services. The Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, a global initiative funded by PEPFAR and USAID and led by FHI 360, advocates for greater awareness of HIV prevention and how it can be easily obtained.
HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, can be transmitted through bodily fluids such as sperm, vaginal fluid, blood, and breastmilk. According to recent data from the Philippines, sexual exposure was responsible for 96% of newly reported cases. The virus harms humans by destroying immune system cells, making it difficult to fight off other illnesses or diseases. If left untreated, HIV infections can progress to AIDS.
Fortunately, advances and innovations in medicine and technology have simplified HIV prevention. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), taken daily or whenever a person has a planned sexual intercourse, can reduce the risk of HIV acquisition through sexual transmission by up to 99%.
Bagasao shared a strategy known as combination prevention. This strategy gives individuals a variety of options while acknowledging that HIV prevention is a personal responsibility. Despite PrEP being a breakthrough in HIV prevention, the challenge now is to provide adequate public education about it while also ensuring that PrEP and other methods are available to those in need.
