Google and DHL lead the charge for sustainable global shipping

“By deploying SAF across our international network, we are pleased to offer the GoGreen Plus service to our long-standing partner Google. We are confident that this agreement and Google's meaningful investment will encourage others to take the same initiative and drive the transition to low-emission transportation services using sustainable aviation fuel.” ~John Pearson, CEO of DHL

In order to support current decarbonization technologies in air cargo transportation, Google, one of the biggest technology companies in the world, and DHL, the leading global brand in the logistics industry, have partnered to use DHL Express GoGreen Plus service with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The initiative includes expedited shipping of Google devices in the Devices & Services business unit across the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

“Google has a goal to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain by 2030. Optimizing how we transport Google devices around the world is a key part of this journey. That's why we're thrilled to collaborate with partners like DHL, who share our passion for Net-Zero. The SAF program is a big step forward in that direction.” ~Omar Molina, Director of Global Transportation at Google

The dialogue between Google and DHL Express began during the DHL Era of Sustainable Logistics Global Summit in April 2023, which brought together key decision-makers, thought leaders, and stakeholders to discuss cleaner, greener logistics. Building on the summit, Google chose to collaborate with DHL Express on a four-month pilot project last June, utilizing SAF. The pilot proved to be successful, leading Google to expand its partnership with DHL Express.

GoGreen Plus, which DHL Express launched in 2023, uses sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to help customers lower the CO2 emissions related to their shipments. GoGreen Plus is currently backed by three of the largest contracts in the industry, with BP, Neste, and World Energy. SAF is made from renewable feedstocks with a sustainable energy profile, such as waste, hydrogen, and used cooking oil. Kerosene and conventional carbon-intensive aviation fuels are derived from crude oil.

GoGreen Plus is a component of the DHL Group's objective to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Since the company's air network accounts for about 70% of its carbon footprint, sustainable air transport solutions are critical to developing sustainable logistics operations.
