In line with founder Henry Sy, Sr.'s vision and a program that commenced in 2007, SM Foundation organized simultaneous Urban Farming initiatives on July 7 at SM City North Edsa Annex and 16 other SM malls. This initiative served as a testament to the progress made over the years and a celebration of the vision alongside valued partners, including government agencies and LGUs that have been instrumental over the past 16 years.
The Urban Farming initiative, led by SM Foundation through its Kabalikat Sa Kabuhayan on Sustainable Agriculture Program (KSK-SAP), aims to uplift the farmer community, promote environmental consciousness, enhance food security, and provide livelihood opportunities for marginalized urban communities. The KSK-SAP offers comprehensive urban farming techniques, product development, marketing, and basic accounting through strategically-located field schools.
The KSK program has conducted over 260 sustainable agricultural trainings, benefiting 28,550 farmers. These trainings have been conducted in both rural and urban settings, exposing participants to sustainable farming methods that promote the cultivation of nutritious, high-quality vegetables and fruits.
SM Foundation collaborates with SM Supermalls and SM Markets, along with various government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Trade and Industry, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Tourism, and the Quezon City Government. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring the program's success and viability.
For instance, by involving SM Supermalls and SM Markets, urban farmers can market and sell their produce at Sunday Markets held in several malls nationwide. As the volume of produce grows, SM Markets offer additional outlets, creating an integrated and circular economic ecosystem.
The vision set forth by Henry Sy, Sr. in 2007 has proven prescient, addressing contemporary challenges in agriculture, sustainable food production, food security, and urban development. The SM Foundation takes pride in carrying on and delivering this vision, partnering with stakeholders to provide genuine income opportunities.
SM is committed to creating a sustainable environment, implementing measures such as renewable energy use and energy-saving devices in mall buildings. The #SMGreenMovement encourages everyone to join in adopting a more sustainable lifestyle at smgreenmovement.com.
